Message (not that they usually do). The rating does not measure how quickly the tread will wear down, it measures how quickly the tread will be worn beyond use.

For example, if you have two tires with a 160 TW rating and one of them has a 9/32" deep tread and the other a 7/32" deep tread (when new), the one with 9/32" deep tread will wear faster, but it will reach the wear bars at the same time as the one with 7/32" deep tread (in theory).
